Ficorni Cista

Artist- Novios Plautios
Year- 4th century BCE
Dimensions and Material- 2 feet 6 inches high, sheet bronze
Place-  Palestrina, Italy
- This interesting syndical container depicts a medium sized gift that was made for women’s toiletry. These economical containers had lids and intriguing handles with separate feet or stools that held the container upright and balanced. These particular Cistae were also commonly used for the dead in tombs. These economical Cistae were invented in different shapes and sizes had amazing story decorations on the outer surface.  The foundation or birth of these types of Cistae are said to evolved from Rome. This piece of art is significant and important because this syndical container is used for trash or toiletry and art is still being depicted among the most uncommon places you would think an artist would create art for and from. I chose this Cistae specifically because of the feet that hold the container upright and balanced. This specific container engraves or depicts the myth of Argonauts. (Kleiner,153)(metmuseum.org)
