Exhibition Statement:
This show is about creativity through pottery sculpture. Pottery is challenging in that it is a multi step process to create the pot or vase, but also another challenge to depict imagery and experience on the outside. The primary theme revolves around early Greek artist but also an experience from different cultures including Sayf al-Din Tuquztimur and his creative lamp. Different techniques and styles are utilized in creating pottery and many artist challenge themselves and one another in

This show is about creativity through pottery sculpture. Geometric Krater

Dimensions and Material- About 3feet high, Terracota
Place- Athens, Greece
Hirschfield was an active ancient Greek painter in the late geometric era. This piece marks a historical event around 740 BC. Interestingly enough this period was called the geometric era. The geometric era was from 900 BC through 700 BC. The Geometric era was known for depicting body parts through imagery. The pot above is very large and depicts a buried man in a grave in the Dipylon cemetery of Athens. This pot is different from most pottery in that the bottom of the pot is open. The entire vase is covered in abstract artistry and motifs. The illustration on the pot depicts the mourning of a man. There are many symbolic indirect messages directed at the audience in this artist pictures. There are women walking that have shield torsos and their arms in a square style above their head symbolizing a mysterious story. This piece of art is significant because it arguably marked the turning point of Greek art. Story telling through depictions on vases was more complicated and deeper in thought and transition. Picasso
Artist- Pablo Picasso
Year- 1969 edition 350
Dimensions and Material- height 12 3/4 in. (32.4 cm).
One of the well known modern day 20th century artist that many people have heard of and know of is Pablo Picasso. Pablo Picasso was born in 1881 and in 1973. As a child Picasso started drawing and a the age of sixteen Picasso dropped out of school and it wasn’t untill the early 1890’s that Pablos father received a job at an art school, and this is where Picasso attended as a student. As Picasso was educated he began to gain popularity and started traveling around the world learning new styles of art. The above piece of art has a very shape with a very thick and space opening handle. The front of the vase is a very different depiction than we have viewed from the 5th and 6th century. This pot was most likely constructed for decorations or for liquid holding as a pitcher. The opening at the rim of the pot is very small and with a thick handle it illustrates a possible liquid holding. Two suns on the front of the vase illustrate what appear to be eye balls. Overall this vase and or pitcher depicts a happy and joyful face from simple constructive striations of paint. This piece is significant because it illustrates how simple a piece of art may be in the new era and or centuries. In today’s era this piece is worth thousands of dollars. I chose this pitcher because of how the face reaches out to viewers immediately. The only question I had with this pitcher was how much it weighs with and without liquid? AMPHORA
Material and Dimensions-Terracotta; H. 22 5/8 in. (57.5 cm)
Artist- Andokides
Place- Italy
Year- Around 525-530 BC
- Andokides was an interesting artist and vase painter who was very low profile but started the new generation of a new technique of pottery and vase paintings and creations. The artist of this vase is said to be Andokides but Andokides was known as anonymous meaning people only knew of his signature. Andokides pottery innovations are also known as red- figure technique. These types of vases were used to storage liquids and certain grains. On this particular vase you notice two men holding an object engaging in a tug of war act. The man on the left is Herakles also known as Hercules, and the man on the right is Apollo. These two ancient Greek authoritative men were tugging over a sacred tripod. This particular art piece is significant and important because it began a new era of pottery painting. These paintings depicted stories of history and novels. Andokides decision to depict a critical educational timeline is very interesting. The artist has no statement due to how old and ancient this particular piece of art is. Also Andokides was always under the radar so getting a statement from him would be challenging.

Vatican Amphora
Artist- Exekias
Material and Dimensions-61 cm, Terracota
Place- Vulci, Italy
Year-Around 540-530 B.C.
- Exekias was an ancient Greek vase painter. Exekias is known for his work in the black figure technique. This large two handled pot was used for liquid and small sediment servings. Exekias painted a story of two warriors on this particular pot. Achilles on the left and Ajax on the right are depicted to be playing a dice game. This significant art piece is important because it illustrates how serious and dedicated warriors were to their towns. If you examine the picture, Achilles and Ajax both hold their spears in one hand while playing the dice game. This shows extreme dedications and illustrates a historical period where tensions must have been high. This piece of art is important because it shows how significant and how one warrior was devoted for action at any given time. Exekias was popular in his era and many artist copied his style of paintings and began drawing many warrior paintings including Andokides himself.
